During the last years Koh Chang has become, besides Phuket and Koh Samui, a major tourist attraction. This resulted in a considerable improvement of the infrastructure. Two car/passenger ferries are available, one at Ao Thammachart (the closest to the airport) and one close to Laem Ngnop (Centerpoint ferry, the closest to Trat and most suitable for the bus traveler).
Besides the car ferries, there are a lot of converted small fishing boats running between the mainland and Koh Chang, however for safety and price transparency it is recommended to use the comfortable service of the car ferries.
The new airport, more than 30 kilometer away from Trat but only 15 kilometer from the car ferry Thammachat and 20 kilometer away from the Centerpoint Ferry, serves mainly the tourists heading for Koh Chang. (Contact: www.bangkokair.com)
After arrival at Koh Chang you don't follow the main tourist stream to the west coast, but remain on the not yet overcrowded and overdeveloped East coast, still a secret destination for the individual and demanding traveler.
